Hell’s Gate National Park is one of the most atmospheric and unique safari destinations in Kenya. Located in the Great Rift Valley near Lake Naivasha, it is named for the intense geothermal activity within its boundaries. Characterized by towering cliffs, water-gouged gorges, and stark volcanic pillars, this park famously served as the inspiration for the landscapes in Disney’s The Lion King and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.

What to expect

- The „No-Vehicle“ Advantage: Hell’s Gate is one of the very few national parks in East Africa where you can hike, cycle, and rock climb freely among wildlife.
- The Wildlife: While there are no large predators (making it safe for walking), you will encounter herds of Plains Zebra, Giraffe, Buffalo, Eland, and Hartebeest. It is also a global hotspot for cliff-nesting raptors, including the rare Lammergeier vulture.
- Geological Wonders: Explore a landscape shaped by ancient volcanic eruptions, featuring hissing steam vents and the dramatic Ol Njorowa Gorge.

Best time to visit

Best for day trips or en-routes, you can have a hiking or cycling sessions as the gorge trails are dry and safe.

Aktivitäten

Adventure Awaits At Hell’s Gate ist die Reise genauso wichtig wie die Tierwelt. Wir können folgende geführte Erlebnisse organisieren:

- Radfahren unter Zebras: Mieten Sie ein Mountainbike am Elsa-Tor und fahren Sie die 8 km lange Straße hinunter zur Schlucht. Es fühlt sich nicht so an, als neben einem Giraffen-Turm oder einer Gazellenherde zu treten.
- Wanderung durch die Ol-Njorowa-Schlucht: Steigen Sie hinab in die tiefen, gewundenen Schluchten der unteren Schlucht. Du erkundest enge Slot-Canyons, siehst das „Devil’s Bedroom“ und begegnest heißen Quellen sowie kleinen Wasserfällen. (Benötigt einen lokalen Maasai-Guide zur Sicherheit).
- Klettern am Fischer’s Tower: Testen Sie Ihre Nerven mit diesem 25 Meter langen Vulkanstopfen. Es ist ein beliebter Ort sowohl für Anfänger als auch für erfahrene Bergsteiger und bietet von oben aus einen Panoramablick auf den Park.
- Olkaria Geothermal Spa: Nach einer langen Wanderung tauchen Sie Ihre Muskeln in das natürlich beheizte, mineralreiche türkisfarbene Wasser des Olkaria Spa – des größten natürlichen Spas Afrikas.
- Fotografie & Vogelbeobachtung: Fangen Sie die „Schauspiele der Schlucht“ ein und nutzen Sie das Vogelversteck im Mervyn Carnelley Raptor-Versteck, um Geier und Adler aus nächster Nähe zu beobachten.
- Besuchen Sie das Maasai-Kulturzentrum: In der Nähe des Eingangs finden Sie mehr über die Traditionen, die Perlenarbeit und die Geschichte der lokalen Maasai-Gemeinschaft, die seit Jahrhunderten mit dieser Landschaft koexistiert.
