A walk on the wild side

Hell’s Gate National Park is one of the most atmospheric and unique safari destinations in Kenya. Located in the Great Rift Valley near Lake Naivasha, it is named for the intense geothermal activity within its boundaries. Characterized by towering cliffs, water-gouged gorges, and stark volcanic pillars, this park famously served as the inspiration for the landscapes in Disney’s The Lion King and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.

What to expect

- The « No-Vehicle » Advantage: Hell’s Gate is one of the very few national parks in East Africa where you can hike, cycle, and rock climb freely among wildlife.
- The Wildlife: While there are no large predators (making it safe for walking), you will encounter herds of Plains Zebra, Giraffe, Buffalo, Eland, and Hartebeest. It is also a global hotspot for cliff-nesting raptors, including the rare Lammergeier vulture.
- Geological Wonders: Explore a landscape shaped by ancient volcanic eruptions, featuring hissing steam vents and the dramatic Ol Njorowa Gorge.

Best time to visit

Best for day trips or en-routes, you can have a hiking or cycling sessions as the gorge trails are dry and safe.

Activités

L’aventure attend À la porte de l’enfer, le voyage est tout aussi important que la faune. Nous pouvons organiser les expériences guidées suivantes :

- Faire du vélo parmi les zèbres : Louez un VTT à la porte Elsa et parcourez la route de 8 km jusqu’à la gorge. Il n’y a pas vraiment de sensation comparable à pédaler aux côtés d’une tour de girafes ou d’un troupeau de gazelles.
- Randonnée dans la gorge d’Ol Njorowa : Descendez dans les canyons profonds et sinueux de la gorge inférieure. Vous explorerez des canyons étroits en fente, verrez la « Chambre du Diable » et rencontrerez des sources chaudes et de petites cascades. (Nécessite un guide local masaï pour la sécurité).
- Escalade à la tour Fischer : Testez vos nerfs sur ce bouchon volcanique de 25 mètres. C’est un lieu prisé aussi bien pour les débutants que pour les grimpeurs expérimentés, offrant une vue panoramique sur le parc depuis le sommet.
- Spa géothermique d’Olkaria : Après une longue randonnée, baignez vos muscles dans les eaux turquoise naturellement chauffées et riches en minéraux du Spa d’Olkaria — le plus grand spa naturel d’Afrique.
- Photographie & observation des oiseaux : Capturez les « spectacles de la gorge » et utilisez l’endroit de l’abri des oiseaux du Mervyn Carnelley Raptor Hide pour repérer des vautours et des aigles de près.
- Visitez le Centre culturel Maasai : Situé près de l’entrée, découvrez les traditions, le travail des perles et l’histoire de la communauté locale Maasaï qui coexiste avec ce paysage depuis des siècles.
