Hell’s Gate National Park is one of the most atmospheric and unique safari destinations in Kenya. Located in the Great Rift Valley near Lake Naivasha, it is named for the intense geothermal activity within its boundaries. Characterized by towering cliffs, water-gouged gorges, and stark volcanic pillars, this park famously served as the inspiration for the landscapes in Disney’s The Lion King and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.

- The “No-Vehicle” Advantage: Hell’s Gate is one of the very few national parks in East Africa where you can hike, cycle, and rock climb freely among wildlife.

The Wildlife: While there are no large predators (making it safe for walking), you will encounter herds of Plains Zebra, Giraffe, Buffalo, Eland, and Hartebeest. It is also a global hotspot for cliff-nesting raptors, including the rare Lammergeier vulture.

Geological Wonders: Explore a landscape shaped by ancient volcanic eruptions, featuring hissing steam vents and the dramatic Ol Njorowa Gorge.

Fietsen onder zebra’s: Huur een mountainbike bij de Elsa-poort en rijd de 8 km lange weg naar de kloof. Er is geen gevoel zo fijn als naast een toren giraffen of een kudde gazellen te fietsen.

Wandelen in de Ol Njorowa Kloof: Daal af in de diepe, kronkelende kloven van de lagere kloof. Je verkent smalle slotcanyons, ziet de “Devil’s Bedroom” en komt warmwaterbronnen en kleine watervallen tegen. (Vereist een lokale Maasai-gids voor de veiligheid).

Rotsklimmen bij Fischer’s Tower: Test je zenuwen met deze 25 meter lange vulkanische plug. Het is een populaire plek voor zowel beginners als ervaren klimmers, met panoramisch uitzicht over het park vanaf de top.

Olkaria Geothermal Spa: Na een lange wandeling wekt u uw spieren in het natuurlijk verwarmde, mineraalrijk turquoise water van de Olkaria Spa—de grootste natuurlijke spa van Afrika.

Fotografie & Vogels: Leg de “spektakels van de kloof” vast en gebruik het vogelschuilplaatsen bij de Mervyn Carnelley Raptor-schuilplaats om gieren en arenden van dichtbij te spotten.

Bezoek het Maasai Cultureel Centrum: Gelegen dicht bij de ingang, leer je over de tradities, kralenwerk en geschiedenis van de lokale Maasai-gemeenschap die al eeuwenlang naast dit landschap leeft.
