My fiancé and I reached out to multiple tour providers, including Mufasa, last year to plan our honeymoon in Kenya. We ended up choosing Mufasa thanks to the help of Caroline answering all my silly questions and catering to my requests (we love photography so we insisted on a canvas vehicle!). She helped us book the accommodation (letting them know it's our honeymoon), extra activities and a bush plane and was very friendly to talk to!Ephantus picked us up from the airport, Kevin was with us in Ol Pejeta (Serena Sweetwaters) and Samburu (Elephant Bedroom Camp), and Hosea was out driver guide for Maasai Mara (Entim Mara Camp) and a night in Nairobi.Kevin is an exceptional guide and driver. As an ornithologist and ringer (who also works with RSPB!), he knows every single bird down to the specifics. His enthusiasm for birds was contagious and I ended up with many amazing photos of so many species I didn’t even know existed, including weavers, bee eaters, falcons and eagles. While most other guides would have driven you around in silence and stopping for only the most obvious animals, Kevin would point out every single bird he sees. He has almost an x-ray-like vision that airport security scanners would be very jealous of. On the way to Ol Pejeta, he spotted a group of colobus monkeys on the side of the road, an incredible and unique encounter we’ll never forget. He also spotted a leopard up in a tree in Samburu, the only guide in the park to see her that day, as well as lionesses hiding in the thick grass, all the while navigating the tough winding roads of the reserves. He is incredible and predicting an animal’s behaviour to put vehicle in the best position for photos while remaining at a safe and respectful distance. In Samburu (Buffalo Springs), we found a leopard, cheetah AND lions all within the span of an hour! He is always willing to go the extra mile to make sure you get the most out of each park, liaising with rangers and other guides to know where the animals are and where the action is. You can’t meet anyone that loves animals more than Kevin and it shows. Finally, he is an incredible driver, he knows all the roads to get you to each location before anyone else!In Maasai Mara and Nairobi, Hosea was amazing. Firstly, his energy is completely unmatched and is absolutely required for those early 6am game drives. He is also a very experienced and safe driver, getting us out of a river when we were forced to drive through it just minutes in (it’s been a rainy August). Being migration season, the highlight of the Mara was to see the wildebeest river crossing, but when we arrived, there were little wildebeest left in the reserve (they headed back to the Serengeti early). Hosea worked day and night to make sure we saw a crossing. When we took a morning to do a hot air balloon ride and were convinced we’d miss a crossing, Hosea was secretly doing his homework and ended up driving us to the other side of the reserve where we eventually saw the wildebeest and zebras cross the Mara river - he knew exactly where to park (far away from all the other 20 vehicles that blocked the original entrance into the river) and we got an amazing view as the animals took a last minute diversion and crossed the river right past us! He was also very professional and organised, making sure our packed lunches were of good quality for full day game drives and organised a sundowner on our last day (except that it rained!) and being there on time every morning and before every game drive. In Nairobi, Hosea was very patient (his catchphrase is ‘hakuna matata’), driving us between parks and tourist points (the restaurant Carnivore was incredible) and waiting in the car all day while we did some shopping before dropping us off at the airport. We witnessed many examples of bad drivers and bad guides during this trip from other companies, which was very upsetting to see. They got too close to animals, blocked lion hunts by getting in the way or stressing out wildebeest during river crossings. Kevin and Hosea kept safe distances, letting them approach us instead of chasing them down, and simultaneously ended up giving us the best views and photographic opportunities out of all the other vehicles in the vicinity. I have learnt so much from this trip, not only on animals but about Kenya and the wonderful world we live in.I would not hesitate to recommend Mufasa, especially Kevin and Hosea, to anyone that wants a personalised and genuine safari experience in Kenya! We could see many animals and got many information. Besides Odhis is very friendly. The lodges were very good and my wife who is suffering from a coeliac disease could eat gluten-free everywhere. In a nutshell, a great experience in Kenya thanks to Mufasa. Our guide David Peter is a very nice guy. He told us lots of stuff about the animals and the nature of Tansania. We always felt safe and well cared for. We would definitely recommend booking a tour with them. Hakuna matata!Verified Mixed experience: Great Kenya Safari, terrible experience in Tanzania. Check your vehicle. This is a tough review to write, as we had mixed experience. 5/5 for Kenya safari, and 1/5 for Tanzania safari. So I must give it 3/5 stars.First of all, we were very excited to go on this once in a lifetime trip and chose Mufasa because we had 2 family members take very successful trips with Mufasa. For this reason, we spent an enormous amount of money to put together a 12 day trip and had high expectations. 4 nights in Tanzania, 3 nights in Kenya, and 4 nights in Zanzibar Unfortunately we had a VERY negative experience during the Tanzanian portion of our trip and it completely spoiled over half of the safari portion of our trip. Kenya was awesome, however the Tanzania part was terrible.First of all, the office communicated very well in advance of the trip and were very prompt and easy to work with. I will break the review down into 3 portions:1) Tanzania. The vehicle was unsafe, uncomfortable and not acceptable to take clients into safari with. The driver/guide was absolutely terrible as both a driver and a guide.-Vehicle: 2 of the 6 passenger seats did not have functioning seatbelts. One of them we had to fix with electrical tape to keep the belt from unravelling. One headlight was not functioning. The seats were uncomfortable and old. But worst of all, on day 2, the left from wheel flew off the axle at 35 mph. This is impossible to occur without the lug nuts either missing and/or loose. Here are more details:In the middle of the Serengeti desert, the tire flew off. The brake caliper was torn off and the axle was buried in the sand. Fortunately our guide along with a couple other guides were able to get a spare tire onto the left front, but only with 3 lug nuts (and had to steal some from another tire. Note that one of the other tires was also missing a lug nut already). The left front brake was torn of the wheel, so we only had 3 brakes for the rest of the trip. We were able to get to a nearby gate and had the vehicle made functional, however never had the brake fixed. **In short, this vehicle was unsafe and unacceptable for this trip. For the money we spent, this is shocking and disturbing that they would send clients out into the desert with a vehicle like this.Now we’ll talk about the driver/guide:-He hardly ever communicated and rarely gave any information about the animals that we saw during our trip. We had to pull information from him, and even then he’d give 1 or 2 word answers. He would say “there are hyenas on the left” and that was the extent of what he told us. -I didn’t trust his driving. I believe that our wheel flew off because he was driving too fast on the bumpy roads (in addition to the likely loose or missing lug nuts). He also made a couple dangerous passes on the opposite side of the road coming out of Ngoro Ngoro.-He blatantly lied to us when he got lost going into our migration camp in the Serengeti. Due to our tire issue above, we were delayed getting on route to our migration camp. It became dark and our guide got lost in the dark and didn't have an offline map and didn't have phone service. I kept asking him if he knew where we were going and he kept reassuring us. However it was obvious we were driving in circles and up and down the same road (I was mapping it on my GPS watch because we seemed lost). Ultimately our guide got lost and we arrived at our migration camp 5 hours late. My family was scared, hungry, tired and afraid to get out of the vehicle in the dark to use the bathroom. It was a horrible experience, one that I’d never want anyone to go through. Finally we drove to an area where he was able to call the migration camp. They sent another guide out to find us and then we followed the other driver to the camp. We didn’t arrive at the camp until 10:30pm (were supposed to get there 5 hours before). So we completely lost an entire afternoon enjoying what should have been a very nice experience at the camp. We were in the vehicle for over 14 hours on this day in total.-The guide would disappear for over an hour at a time each day and not tell us where he was going. Once during a gas stop, and another day during a lunch break. After we finished lunch, he walked off for coffee and didn't come back for an hour.2) Kenya - We were so relieved to finally get rid of our Tanzanian guide once crossing into Kenya and met Leonard and received our new vehicle. We were SO PLEASED with both Leonard and the landcrusier. Leonard was incredible - safe, kind, educated us on the culture and animals the entire time and is what we expected for out trip. Thankfully the Kenya part of our trip was wonderful and couldn’t have been happier. I can’t say enough about how great Leonard was. A true professional and made for a wonderful experience in Kenya. The vehicle was comfortable, and it had all of the lug nuts present on all tires.3) ZanzabarThis portion was great. They did a great job organizing the flight and hotel and transportation. The hotel was beautiful. I’d definitely stay there again. I gave this feedback to Mufasa and they were receptive and appreciative for the feedback. I asked for a small amount of compensation for our loss of time at the camp, terrible guiding in Tanzania and stress of being lost for 5 hours. Unfortunately they didn't feel compensation was warranted.Overall I can't recommend Mufasa based on the above. If I were to use them, I'd do the following:-Require guides to have off line maps downloaded.-Require vehicle inspection before departure.-Consider only using them in Kenya. I think Mufasa is based in Kenya so wonder if their Tanzania operations aren't as solid. This is just a guess though. Maybe we just got unlucky. I did note that our guide was not on their website, so wonder if they used an independent contractor guide that wasn't as reliable.
