Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary

  • Eden Between The Tsavos

Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary is a 28,000-acre private conservancy that serves as a vital wildlife corridor between Tsavo East and Tsavo West National Parks. Unlike the vast, rugged plains of the surrounding Tsavo ecosystem, Taita Hills offers a more intimate and verdant landscape characterized by grassy plains, riverine forests, and the dramatic backdrop of the Taita Hills mountains.

  • What to expect

    1. The Wildlife Corridor: Because it is a private sanctuary, the animal density is high. It is a haven for massive herds of elephants, lions, leopards, cheetahs, and the rare fringe-eared oryx.

    2. Birdwatcher’s Haven: With over 300 recorded species, the sanctuary is a vital habitat for both local and migratory birds, including the extremely rare Taita Thrush and Taita White-eye.

    3. Exclusive Access: As a private conservancy, Taita Hills offers a more secluded experience with fewer tourist vehicles than the public national parks.

  • Seasonal Overview

    1. Night Game Drives: Experience the thrill of the African bush after dark. Using filtered spotlights, our guides track nocturnal hunters like leopards, hyenas, and the elusive honey badger.

    2. Wildlife “Hide” Photography: Spend time in the underground tunnel at Salt Lick Safari Lodge. This “hide” puts you at ground level with the animals, allowing for world-class, close-up photography of wildlife drinking at the waterhole.

    3. World War I Battlefield Tours: For history buffs, the sanctuary and surrounding hills are home to significant WWI sites where British and German forces clashed. We can arrange guided tours to the forts and sniper posts.

    4. Guided Nature Walks: Explore the smaller details of the bush on foot. Accompanied by a sanctuary ranger, you’ll learn about animal tracking, indigenous plants, and the vibrant birdlife of the Taita ecosystem.

    5. Bush Breakfasts & Sundowners: Enjoy a private meal in the heart of the wild. We set up sundowners on scenic ridges where you can watch the sun dip behind the Taita Hills with a drink in hand.

    6. Visit the Taita Hills Community: Engage with the local Taita people. Learn about their unique culture, agriculture in the highlands, and how they benefit from the conservation efforts of the sanctuary.
