A walk on the wild side
Hell’s Gate National Park is one of the most atmospheric and unique safari destinations in Kenya. Located in the Great Rift Valley near Lake Naivasha, it is named for the intense geothermal activity within its boundaries. Characterized by towering cliffs, water-gouged gorges, and stark volcanic pillars, this park famously served as the inspiration for the landscapes in Disney’s The Lion King and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.

What to expect

Adventure Awaits At Hell’s Gate, the journey is just as important as the wildlife. We can organize the following guided experiences:
-
-
Cycling Among Zebras: Rent a mountain bike at the Elsa Gate and ride the 8km road down to the gorge. There is no feeling quite like pedaling alongside a tower of giraffes or a herd of gazelles.
-
Hiking the Ol Njorowa Gorge: Descend into the deep, winding canyons of the lower gorge. You’ll explore narrow slot canyons, see the “Devil’s Bedroom,” and encounter hot springs and small waterfalls. (Requires a local Maasai guide for safety).
-
Rock Climbing at Fischer’s Tower: Test your nerves on this 25-meter volcanic plug. It is a popular spot for both beginners and experienced climbers, offering panoramic views of the park from the top.
-
Olkaria Geothermal Spa: After a long hike, soak your muscles in the naturally heated, mineral-rich turquoise waters of the Olkaria Spa—the largest natural spa in Africa.
-
Photography & Birding: Capture the “spectacles of the gorge” and use the bird hide at the Mervyn Carnelley Raptor Hide to spot vultures and eagles at close range.
-
Visit the Maasai Cultural Center: Located near the entrance, learn about the traditions, beadwork, and history of the local Maasai community who have co-existed with this landscape for centuries.
