Lake Naivasha

Lake Naivasha

  • The Jewel of The Great Rift Valley

At an elevation of 1,884 meters, Lake Naivasha is the highest of the Rift Valley lakes and one of its few freshwater sanctuaries. Fringed by yellow-barked fever trees and vast papyrus swamps, the lake is a world-class birding destination and home to a massive population of over 1,500 hippos. Its name derives from the Maasai word Nai’posha (“Rough Water”), referring to the sudden storms that can sweep across its surface.

  • What to expect

    1. A Birdwatcher’s Paradise: With over 400 species of birds recorded, including the majestic African Fish Eagle, pelicans, and kingfishers, it is a premier destination for ornithologists.

    2. The “Garden” Safari: Unlike the dusty plains of other parks, Naivasha is green and cool, making it the ideal place to unwind, enjoy a “High Tea,” or take a boat safari.

    3. Proximity to Adventure: Lake Naivasha serves as the perfect base camp for exploring nearby Hell’s Gate National Park and Mount Longonot.

Lake Naivasha Resort

Famous for its expansive lawns where hippos come to graze every evening at dusk—a must-see experience.

    1. Boat Safaris: Take a private boat ride to get within meters of massive hippo pods and watch the African Fish Eagle dive for its prey. It is the best way to see the lake’s vibrant ecosystem.

    2. Crescent Island Game Walk: Visit this private island sanctuary (a submerged volcanic crater). Because there are no predators, you can walk freely among giraffes, zebras, and waterbucks—it’s where scenes from Out of Africa were filmed!

    3. Birdwatching Tours: Spend a morning with our specialist guides identifying rare species in the papyrus reeds and the acacia forests surrounding the lake.

    4. Visit Elsamere Conservation Centre: The former home of Joy and George Adamson (of Born Free fame). Enjoy a traditional English high tea on the lawn while Colobus monkeys play in the trees above.

    5. Flower Farm Tours: Naivasha is the heart of Kenya’s floriculture. Take a guided tour of a world-class rose farm to see how millions of roses are grown for export.

    6. Horseback Safaris: Experience the thrill of riding through the sanctuary forests, getting closer to the plains game than you ever could in a vehicle.
